ABSTRACT
Background The gut microbiota may contribute to depressive symptoms. The gut microbiota
may play a role in stress responding. The gut microbiota constitutes a dynamic microbial
system constantly challenged by many biological variables, including environmental
factors. Inflammation elevates risk for depression. Mounting evidence suggests that these
anti-inflammatory effects are mediated by the microbiome. Stress and depression can increase
gut barrier permeability. In turn, the gut bacteria release metabolites, toxins, and
neurohormones.
Obiectives To examine how diet and stress reciprocally interact with the gut microbiota and
inflammation. To review different interventions that can modulate microbiota and could
modulate the stress according to the underlying mechanisms whereby the gut-brain axis
influences stress.
Materials and methods Since the gut microbiota constitute a changeable and experience-
dependent ecosystem, they provide potential therapeutic targets that can be modulated as new
interventions for dysbiosis-related disorders.
Results A better understanding of the mechanism underlying stress modulation through the
microbiota may open new avenues for the design of therapeutics that could boost the pursued
clinical benefits. Diet functions as a major pathway from stress to gut dysbiosis. Healthier
diets can reduce the risk of depression. Deniplant nutraceuticals improved sleep, autonomic
balance, and bowel habits and reduced stress and cortisol levels
Conclusion The influence of stress on gut microbiota and gut microbiota on stress modulation
is clear for different stressors, but although the preclinical evidence is so extensive, the
clinical evidence is more limited. Deniplant nutraceuticals may reduce inflammation and have
positive effects on depression, anxiety, and stress.
